In the first few seconds after coming home, a lot happens: a bag goes down, keys get dropped somewhere, shoes come off and a coat is hung up. If there is no place for each of these actions, the entryway quickly becomes cluttered. A large closed cabinet often does not fit in a narrow hallway or makes the passage too tight. A composition of an open coat rack, bench and mirror console is a lighter solution, but it should be built around daily routines rather than decoration.
Start with the daily routine
Before choosing furniture, list what the household does at the entrance. How many people live there, and how many garments does each leave hanging every day? Are there children, and can they hang things up themselves? Are shoes taken off at the door or kept in rooms? Where do small items such as bags, keys, post and umbrellas go? When guests arrive, where will their coats go?
The answers determine the length of the coat rack, the size of the bench and how many drawers the console needs.
Open coat rack: hooks and height
An open coat rack is the most convenient solution for everyday clothes: garments air out and can be hung up and taken down quickly. But too many clothes on an open rack immediately look untidy. Only everyday items should stay here, while out-of-season clothes move to a wardrobe or closed cupboard.
A few practical rules for planning hooks:
- At least one or two hooks per household member, plus a few spare hooks for guests.
- A separate lower row of hooks for children; as they grow, these hooks can be used for bags or scarves.
- Enough spacing between hooks so thick winter coats do not crush each other.
- A narrow shelf above the rack for hats, gloves and scarves.
- Firm wall fixing for the rack panel, as several winter coats create a significant load.
A panel behind the hooks helps protect the wall. Damp clothes touching wallpaper or paint directly can leave marks.
Bench and shoe storage
A place to sit while putting on shoes is especially important for families with children and older household members. A bench is usually combined with shoe storage underneath: an open shelf, drawer or lidded compartment. An open shelf lets shoes air out; a lidded compartment looks tidier, but then ventilation holes or an air gap should be planned.
For wet shoes, a removable tray or waterproof liner on the lowest shelf protects both floor and furniture. A soft cushion on top makes the bench more comfortable; its cover should be removable and washable, since it gets dirty quickly at the entrance.
The bench should be close to normal chair height so sitting down and standing up are easy. Its length depends on the hallway width and the swing of the door.
Mirror console
The mirror is for a final check before going out. The narrow console beneath it acts as a drop zone for keys, phone, wallet and post. One or two shallow drawers in the console stop these small items from piling up on the surface. A small dish or hook for keys saves searching for them every time.
The mirror's size and height are chosen to suit the household's heights. If a full-length mirror is needed, it can go next to the coat rack, with a smaller mirror above the console for face and hair. Light beside the mirror matters: it should come from the front or side, since a single ceiling light overhead casts shadows on the face.
Sizes and materials for narrow hallways
In a narrow hallway, furniture depth directly reduces the passage width. Open racks and a shallow console have the advantage over a closed cabinet here. Keep a comfortable passage width, and make sure the front door and other doors do not hit the furniture as they open. Rounded corners on the console reduce the risk of knocks in a tight passage.
Materials should suit the character of the entryway. This zone is in contact with street dust, wet umbrellas, bags and shoes. Scratch-resistant laminate surfaces, strong edge banding and matt fronts that wipe clean easily are more practical here. Coat rack hooks should be metal or sturdy plastic and must not snag fabric.
