When a walk-in closet is designed, attention goes mostly to the number of shelves, rails and drawers. But people do not just grab something and leave: they dress, check the mirror, put on shoes and sometimes try several outfits. Without a planned dressing area, the mirror stays in the bedroom, the seat in the hallway, and the closet serves only as a storeroom.
Where the mirror should go
The key requirement for a full-length mirror is room to step back. Standing too close, you cannot see yourself head to toe. In a narrow closet, hanging the mirror on a slim wall between two shelving runs often fails for this reason. It is better placed along the long axis of the room, where the distance in front of it is greatest.
Mirror height depends on the household: the tallest person should see their head and the shortest their shoes. A full-length mirror that starts a little above the floor and rises well above eye level meets this in most cases.
A mirror directly opposite a window creates glare in daytime and turns the person into a silhouette. A wall perpendicular to the window is a better choice, with natural light falling on the face from the side. In a larger closet, a second, smaller mirror opposite the first or set at an angle lets you check the back and side views, which is especially useful for formal wear, coats and long skirts.
Types of mirror
- A wall-fixed mirror is the simplest and most stable, but takes up wall space.
- A mirror on the inside or outside of a wardrobe door needs no extra space; on a hinged door it sits at an angle when open and lets you see your profile.
- On a sliding door a mirror visually enlarges the room, although its position shifts as the door moves.
- A pull-out mirror stored in a narrow slot between shelving is the most space-efficient choice for small closets: pull it out and swivel it when needed, then push it back.
A safety film on the back of the mirror glass keeps fragments together if it breaks. This matters especially in homes with children and on door-mounted mirrors.
Light from the front
The most common mistake in a dressing area is light that comes only from the middle of the ceiling or from behind the person. The face and clothes then fall into shadow in the mirror. Light should reach the person from the front or the sides. Vertical light strips on both sides of the mirror, or a soft light above it, solve this.
Colour matters too. Clothes chosen under light that distorts colour can look completely different in daylight. A neutral white light with good colour rendering, neither too yellow nor too cold, is a sensible choice for the dressing area. Lighting inside the cabinets helps you find things, but does not replace mirror lighting.
Seating: pouffe, bench or island
Somewhere to sit while putting on shoes or packing a bag is the other must-have of a dressing area. A small room can manage with a light pouffe that slides under a shelf when not needed. In a mid-sized room, a low bench placed in front of the shoe racks, open underneath for more pairs, is a good fit.
In a large walk-in closet, a central island with drawers is possible. Its top is used for laying out accessories, folding and packing bags, while the drawers hold watches, belts and jewellery. Leaving space for a seat beside or at one end of the island makes it more useful. Before planning an island, check that there is a comfortable walkway on every side and room for cabinet doors to open fully.

- A socket for a hairdryer, iron or garment steamer.
