Building a real wood-burning fireplace in a flat is often impossible, but an electric fireplace with a flame effect brings the same warm atmosphere to a living room. Building it into a TV wall as part of a furniture composition has become common: fireplace below, TV above, shelves and cabinets on either side. Here, though, two electrical appliances, a heat source and furniture materials share one space. To combine good looks with safety, planning must start with choosing the appliance.
Decorative or heater model
Electric fireplaces fall into two main groups. Some create only a decorative flame effect using LED light, reflective surfaces and sometimes water vapour. They give off almost no heat and are simpler to build into furniture.
Others combine the flame effect with a heating element and fan. In heater mode, warm air usually leaves from the front or top. In that case, the manufacturer's clearances, ventilation paths and material requirements must be followed. If the heater function will rarely be used, choosing a purely decorative model is sometimes more practical.
Distance between fireplace and TV
The mistake seen most often is hanging the screen right over the hot-air vent of a heating fireplace. The warm stream heats the TV housing and panel from behind, and television makers themselves warn against placing sets close to heat.
There are several practical solutions:
- Place the fireplace beside the TV rather than below it.
- Put a sufficiently deep shelf, niche or deflector panel between fireplace and TV to direct heat forward.
- Choose a model that blows warm air forward rather than upward.
- Use the fireplace in decorative mode only.
In every case, exact distances should come from the fireplace and TV instructions; judging by eye is not enough.
Wiring and sockets
A heater fireplace draws high power. Plugging it into one extension lead together with the TV, sound system, games console and lighting is dangerous. The fireplace should have its own socket, ideally on a separate circuit from the consumer unit, which needs agreeing with the electrician during renovation. If renovation is already finished, have a specialist check the existing circuit load and confirm that socket and cable suit the appliance's power. A heater fireplace should also not be placed with its warm air outlet close to curtains, a sofa or bookshelves.
The socket must remain accessible within the furniture. A socket hidden in a fully closed niche behind the fireplace makes it hard to switch off in a fault. Access via a service hatch or side cabinet is a good solution. Cable routes for the TV and other devices should run separately from the fireplace niche, away from the warm zone.
Furniture materials and the niche
The niche housing the fireplace needs a different approach from the rest of the unit. With heater models, heat-resistant materials for the niche interior, the manufacturer's required clearances and free air circulation are essential. Some fireplaces come with a dedicated installation frame, and furniture dimensions should be calculated around it.
For design, the surround is often highlighted with stone-effect panels, painted MDF or slats. Here too, the appliance's technical requirements come first and decorative materials second.
Children and everyday use
In homes with children and pets, a few extra measures help:
- Check how hot the front glass gets in heater mode.
- Keep the remote control out of children's reach.
- Prefer a model with a timer and automatic shut-off.
- Do not let textiles, cushions and toys collect in front of the fireplace.
- Unplug the fireplace when away from home for long periods.
