Bed frame and slat care: creaks and sagging

Terracotta velvet bed frame with a tufted wingback headboard, matching bench, white oval nightstands and a large round lit mirror — Bed frame and slat care: creaks and sagging

A creak every time you turn over at night, or a dip in the middle of the mattress, directly disturbs sleep. Many people blame the mattress first and think about buying a new one. Yet the cause often lies in the bed itself: loose joints, rubbing slats, a bent or broken slat, or a leg not sitting firmly on the floor. Most of these problems can be solved with simple tools and little time. The main task is finding the real source of the noise or sagging.

Finding the source of a creak

First work out whether the noise comes from the mattress or the bed. Take the mattress off, put it on the floor and move around on it. If the noise continues, the cause is in the mattress springs. If not, the problem is in the frame or slats.

Then check the bed without the mattress, section by section. Press on different points of the slatted base by hand: head, middle and foot, left and right edges. Then try rocking the frame corners sideways. The noise usually comes from one or two points. If possible, do this with two people: one presses while the other listens for where the sound comes from.

Joints and bolts

A bed frame consists of side rails joined to the headboard and footboard with bolts, metal brackets or special connectors. Small movements repeated many times every night gradually loosen these joints, especially in the first months. In a loose joint metal rubs against wood and creaks.

The fix is simple: check and tighten all bolts and screws. It is best done a month or two after assembly, then once or twice a year. Do not overdo it when tightening: over-tightening a screw can strip its hole in the board and leave the joint weaker than before. If a metal bracket keeps rubbing against the board, a thin felt or rubber pad between them stops the noise.

Slats and slat holders

Slats are usually fixed to the bed frame with plastic or rubber holders. Over time these holders wear, crack or pop out, and the slat moves freely inside and creaks. Replacing a broken holder with the same model is usually a few minutes' work.

Check the slats themselves too. Bent slats sit at different heights from their neighbours and create a dip in the mattress. An important detail is the direction of the curve: a curved slat should be fitted with the arch facing up so it carries the load elastically. A slat taken out during cleaning and put back upside down quickly flattens and stops doing its job. A cracked or broken slat must be replaced, because it puts extra load on the slats beside it.

Sagging in the middle and extra support

In a double bed the greatest load falls in the middle. Wider beds usually have a lengthwise centre rail with a support leg fixed to it. If that leg does not reach the floor properly, the centre rail gradually bends and the mattress dips in the middle. Adjusting the height of the centre leg or adding an extra support solves this.

Slat spacing matters too. Mattress makers often specify suitable slat spacing for their mattresses. If the gaps are too wide, a soft mattress sinks between the slats, and both the mattress and sleep quality suffer.

Legs and the floor

If one of the four legs does not sit fully on the floor, the bed rocks slightly with each movement and the joints loosen faster. The floor may be uneven, or a pad under a leg may have gone missing. On a bed with adjustable feet, turn the foot; on fixed legs, add a thin shim. On laminate and parquet, felt pads protect the floor and reduce sliding.

A short care checklist

  • Check the bolts a month or two after assembly, then once or twice a year.
  • Rotate the mattress regularly so the same spot is not always under load.
  • Do not let children jump on the bed: slats and holders are not designed for impact loads.
  • Use a seat rather than sitting on the edge of the bed for long periods.
  • Do not cover the base with a dense sheet that blocks air circulation under the mattress.
  • On lift-up beds, check the mechanism bolts as well.
