Furniture care is usually remembered only when something goes wrong: a door sags, a stain stays on the sofa, the board under the sink swells. Yet most of these situations can be prevented with small, regular tasks. Splitting care into a calendar does not make it a burden; on the contrary, it makes clear what to do each time and reduces the need for time-consuming "big cleans".
Every week: dust, stains and moisture
Weekly tasks are short, but they do the most to protect how surfaces look.
- Wipe fronts and open shelves with a slightly damp microfibre cloth. Dry wiping drags dust particles across the surface and leaves fine scratches on gloss fronts.
- Clean grease marks on kitchen fronts, especially around the hob and handles, without waiting. Fresh grease comes off with soapy water; old grease needs a stronger product, which is harder on the finish.
- Open the sink cabinet and check for drips on the base. If a small leak is spotted early, the plumbing can be fixed before the board starts to swell.
- Go over dust-collecting seams on sofas and armchairs with a soft brush attachment.
- Wipe up water and coffee drips on the worktop the same day: moisture that seeps into joint lines of laminate and painted surfaces leaves marks over time.
Every month: hardware and edges
The monthly check focuses on the mechanical parts. A few minutes is enough.
- Open and close every door: if there is sagging, rubbing or weaker soft-close, make a light adjustment with the hinge screws.
- Check drawer movement and clear crumbs and dust from runners with a dry brush. Runners usually need no lubrication; grease attracts dust.
- Look at edge banding, especially near the sink, dishwasher and fridge. A lifting edge glued back early keeps moisture from getting into the board.
- Vacuum the bottom track of sliding wardrobe doors: sand and hair in the track make the rollers run heavily.
- Check handle screws; a loose handle can enlarge the hole in the front.
Every three to six months: deeper care of textiles and surfaces
This is when you deal with what everyday cleaning misses. Turning and swapping sofa cushions helps the filling settle evenly. Removable covers are washed according to the care label. Leather upholstery is wiped with a dedicated cleaner and conditioner so it does not crack.
For solid wood and veneered surfaces, the care product recommended by the manufacturer — oil or wax — can be applied periodically. Lacquered surfaces do not need these products and may even be marked by them, so it is important to know what finish a surface has.
It is also a good time to empty wardrobes and kitchen cabinets, wipe the shelves and clear out what you no longer need. Overloaded shelves sag over time, and that is only visible when a shelf is empty.
Every year: adjustment and seasonal changes
The yearly check looks at the overall condition of the furniture.
- Check the wall fixings of tall cabinets and shelving. In a home with children this is a safety matter.
- Test the gas struts of lift-up beds and wall cabinet flaps: if a flap drifts down, the mechanism may need adjusting or replacing.
- Look for colour change on the side of furniture exposed to sunlight. If needed, move the piece slightly or reduce direct sun with curtains or blinds.
- Before the heating season, check the distance between furniture and radiators. Dry hot air can crack solid wood and cause edge banding to lift on boards.
- In the kitchen, inspect silicone joints between worktop and wall and around the sink; blackened or detached silicone should be renewed.
Adapt the calendar to your home
This list is not a universal template. In a home with children or pets upholstery needs care more often; in a rarely used living room, less often. The most practical approach is to set two or three recurring reminders on your phone: weekly, monthly and yearly. Noting briefly any issue found at each check also helps if a warranty claim is ever needed.
