Hearing the same cupboard door squeak every morning while you make tea is minor but irritating. So is a drawer that comes halfway out and then jams. Most of these problems do not mean the furniture is broken: screws loosen with use, hinges shift slightly, crumbs build up in the runners. Many can be fixed at home with a screwdriver and a few minutes.
Find where the noise comes from
Before fixing anything, work out where the sound starts. Open and close the door slowly with your ear close to the hinges. Sometimes the squeak is not the hinge at all but the edge of the door rubbing against the next door or the carcass. In that case lubricant does nothing; adjustment does.
Possible sources:
- dry metal-on-metal friction in the hinge pivot;
- the door edge touching a neighbouring front;
- a hinge plate moving because a screw has worked loose;
- a soft-close damper making a sound near the end of its travel.
Adjusting a hinge
Modern concealed hinges usually have three adjustments. One moves the door sideways, towards or away from the next door. Another pulls the door in towards the carcass or pushes it out. The third, often an eccentric cam or slotted hole on the mounting plate, raises or lowers the door.
The rule is simple: turn the screw a quarter or half turn at a time, close the door and check the result. If a door has two or three hinges, adjust them all in the same direction and by roughly the same amount, or the door will twist.
If the screws fixing the hinge to the carcass have loosened, tighten them first. If a screw just spins without biting, the board around the hole has crumbled. A slightly larger screw can be a temporary fix, but a proper repair is better left to a fitter.
Lubrication: where it helps and where it harms
If the hinge pivot itself squeaks, a very small amount of silicone-based lubricant or a spray intended for furniture hardware can help. Apply a single drop to the pivot and wipe off any excess straight away. Do not use cooking oil or heavy grease: they attract dust and make the problem worse over time.
Soft-close dampers and the internal mechanisms of drawer runners should not be lubricated unless the manufacturer says so. They leave the factory lubricated, and extra oil can upset how they work.
Why a drawer sticks
The most common reason a drawer sticks is what is inside it. A spoon that has fallen behind the drawer, a pan edge catching the front from above, or an overfilled drawer rubbing on the rail above will all stop it. Empty the drawer and test it by hand first.
If the problem persists:
- Clean the runners. Crumbs, flour and sugar make runners stiff. Take the drawer out and wipe the runner with a dry or slightly damp cloth.
- Reseat the drawer. A drawer that has been removed and refitted sometimes fails to lock on one side. Push until you hear the catch on both sides.
- Check the front. If the drawer front rubs on the next front, use its adjustment screws to correct the height or side position.
- Reduce the load. A drawer loaded beyond its runner rating sags and rubs at the back.
When sliding wardrobe doors are noisy
On a sliding-door wardrobe, noise and sticking usually come from the bottom track. Dust, hair, a small button or a bead in the track interrupt the rollers. Cleaning the track with the narrow nozzle of a vacuum cleaner often solves it at once. If a door leans to one side or knocks against the wall or the other door, the height can be corrected with the adjustment screw on the bottom rollers. When to call a fitter
Some signs mean a home fix is not enough: the hinge cup has pulled out of the door, the board is cracked or swollen, the runner is bent, the drawer bottom sags, or soft closing has stopped working entirely. Forcing adjustments in these cases can make things worse.
As prevention, checking all hinge screws once or twice a year, cleaning the runners and keeping heavy items in the lower drawers is usually enough.
