Painted and lacquered fronts are loved for their deep, even colour and smooth surface. Owners who love them often come back with the same question, though: why has a small chip appeared on a door corner, fine cracks on the panel next to the oven, or a hairline along an edge? These defects have different causes, and finding the right one decides both the repair and how to avoid it in future.
How a painted surface is built up
A painted front is usually several layers on an MDF core: primer, coloured paint and, where needed, a clear lacquer. Together they form a thin but hard coating. That coating expands and contracts differently from the core beneath it. MDF moves slightly with humidity and temperature, and a hard paint film can only follow so far. Most cracks appear where this mismatch is repeated often.
Impact: the most common cause of chips
Corners and edges are the most vulnerable points. Everyday knocks, such as a chair back hitting a door, a vacuum cleaner nozzle, or a saucepan bumping a drawer, make paint break away at the edge. On sharp 90-degree corners the paint film is thinner and withstands knocks less well. That is why good workshops round front edges to a very small radius: it is barely visible, but the paint sits more evenly on the edge.
Some knocks come from the furniture itself. If the gap between two neighbouring doors is too tight, one rubs the edge of the other as it opens. A door without a soft-close mechanism, pushed shut hard, strikes the carcass with its edges. In a corner unit a drawer handle can hit the adjacent door. In such cases small chips keep appearing at the same point, and the cure is to adjust the hardware or add a hinge restrictor or a small silicone bumper.
Heat and steam
Fronts next to the oven, dishwasher, kettle and coffee machine are regularly exposed to hot steam and temperature swings. Opening the dishwasher the moment the programme ends sends steam straight under the worktop and onto neighbouring fronts. Over time fine cracks, and sometimes blistering, appear in those spots. To prevent it:
- keep the dishwasher closed for a while after the programme ends;
- stand the kettle and slow cooker in an open spot rather than under a wall cabinet;
- keep the gap between the oven and the adjacent front specified by the appliance maker;
- if you run a coffee machine inside a cabinet, keep the door open while it works.
Moisture and water
The bottom edge of the sink cabinet, the lower part of the dishwasher door and plinths splashed when floors are mopped suffer most from moisture. If the paint has a micro-crack or chip, water gets into the MDF, the board swells and the paint starts lifting around it. A small spot then grows quickly. So as soon as you notice the first chip, keep the area dry and have it repaired soon.
When floors are mopped, a wet mop touches the bottom edge of the fronts and the plinth panel again and again. Wiping these areas dry afterwards, and having a watertight seal or profile between the plinth and the floor, noticeably extends the life of painted parts. Under the sink, checking the trap and hose connections from time to time stops a hidden drip from damaging the front from the inside.
Faults that start in production
Some defects come from the finishing process rather than use. If layers are not given enough drying time, the primer does not bond well or the paint is applied too thickly, cracks can appear soon after installation in places with no signs of wear. A network of cracks spread evenly across a door, or chipping with no impact mark, is a typical sign. In that case, contact the maker rather than trying to fix it yourself.
A short list of first steps
- Photograph the defect and note where it is: corner, edge or middle of the panel.
- Check whether there is a source of heat, steam or water nearby.
- Stop water from reaching the chipped area.
- Do not use glue or household paint, as it makes professional repair harder.
