In a showroom both sofas look equally tempting. The difference shows once the sofa is at home: the corner model swallows half the room, or the straight one leaves an empty corner that nobody knows how to fill. Choosing by the room rather than by taste avoids that kind of regret.
Read the shape of the room
In a long, narrow living room a straight sofa usually sits along the long wall, leaving enough distance to a TV unit on the opposite side. A corner sofa in the same room narrows the walkway further, because its short arm cuts across the width.
A room closer to a square works differently. Here a corner sofa joins two walls, frees the centre for a coffee table and creates a compact seating area. If a straight sofa goes into the same room, the missing seats often have to be made up with an extra armchair.
In open-plan flats a corner sofa often acts as a divider: its back faces the dining or kitchen area and marks an invisible boundary around the lounge. Since the back will be on show, make sure it is fully upholstered.
How the family actually sits
After measurements, the second question is how the sofa will be used. If family members sit side by side watching films in the evening, everyone needs room to stretch their legs, and a corner sofa with a chaise section is a comfortable answer. If the living room is mostly for conversation and tea with guests, people sitting face to face matters more, and a straight sofa with two armchairs opposite supports that far better.
With pets or small children in the house, easy-clean upholstery and removable covers matter more than size. Washing the covers of a large corner sofa takes more effort than a straight one, simply because there are more pieces and they are bigger.
Doors, windows and radiators
When drawing the plan, note not only the length of each wall but everything on it. If the short arm of a corner sofa ends up under a window, reaching the curtains becomes awkward. A sofa pushed against a radiator blocks the heat and exposes the upholstery to warm air for long periods.
Check the door swing separately. Corner sofas are often squeezed into the corner next to the door, and the result is a door that does not open fully or a visitor walking straight into the arm of the sofa.
Walkways and movement
Picture the routes people take every day: from the door to the window, the balcony, the kitchen. The sofa should not cut across them. There must be room for legs between the sofa and the coffee table, and a clear path between the table and the TV unit. A corner sofa reduces these distances in two directions at once, so buying one for a small room without measuring is a gamble.
A simple test: mark the sofa footprint on the floor with paper tape and live with the outline for a few days. If the outline gets in the way, the real sofa will too.
Sleeping and guests
If the sofa doubles as a guest bed, allow for the space the mechanism needs. On straight sofas the sleeping part usually pulls forward, which means moving the coffee table every time. On corner sofas the bed is often formed together with the arm, but when opened it can take over the entire centre of the room.
If the sofa will rarely be slept on, a model without a mechanism can be more comfortable to sit on, because the mechanism limits how the seat can be built.
Future changes
A straight sofa is easy to move to another room, another wall or a new flat. A corner sofa is tied to its configuration: once the left or right arm is chosen, rearranging the room becomes difficult. If a move is likely, give this real weight.
A short checklist:
- A long room with the walkway on one side suits a straight sofa.
- A near-square room that needs plenty of seats is a case for a corner sofa.
- Decide which side the arm goes on based on the door and window.
- If there is a sleeping mechanism, draw its opened size on the plan too.
- If a move is likely, a straight sofa plus a separate pouf gives more flexibility.
