For decades, straight and L-shaped sofas have been the default in living rooms. In a big room, though, they can feel thin on the ground: pushed against the walls, they leave the centre empty and seat people far apart, all looking the same way. Curved and half-round sofas take another approach, turning people towards one another and forming a snug conversation circle in the middle. They do not suit every room, however, and in the wrong spot the benefit vanishes.
Where a curved sofa works
The main requirement is space. A curved sofa looks best standing free of the walls, in the centre of the room or facing a window. There, it divides the room into zones: the seating area on one side, and a passage, dining table or bookshelves behind it.
Curved sofas are especially successful:
- In open-plan flats, to visually separate the living area from the kitchen and dining zone.
- In rooms with a large window or panoramic view, turned towards the view.
- Around a fireplace or a central coffee table, to create circular seating.
- In public spaces such as hotel lobbies, restaurant waiting areas or office lounges.
Where it does not suit
In small and medium rooms, a curved sofa often causes problems. It ends up against the wall, leaving an unused crescent-shaped gap behind it. The curve also reduces seating capacity: fewer people sit comfortably than on a straight sofa of the same length, and knees at the ends come close together.
If watching TV is the main purpose, a semicircular shape may not be ideal either, because people at the ends see the screen from the side. A gently curved, almost straight sofa is more practical in that case.
Radius and depth
Curved sofas differ in how tightly they bend. A small-radius sofa forming nearly a half-circle creates an intimate conversation zone, but takes a lot of floor space and brings people close together. A large-radius, gently curved sofa gives more seats and adapts to different uses.
Seat depth deserves special attention. On the inner side of the curve the seat narrows, and on the outer side it widens. Too shallow is uncomfortable, too deep makes leaning back difficult. With a made-to-order sofa, seat depth and backrest angle can be chosen to suit the users' height.
Coffee table and accessories
A round or oval coffee table is the best companion for a curved sofa. Its shape echoes the curve and keeps an equal distance for everyone. A rectangular table ends up far from the people at the ends and breaks the composition.
Small side tables or floor lamps at each end complete the arrangement. Adding one or two armchairs opposite closes the circle and creates a full conversation zone. A round or oval rug also reinforces the sofa's line.
The back view
A sofa standing in the middle of a room is seen from behind, which is not an issue for a sofa against the wall. The back must be neatly upholstered, with seams and fixings concealed. In some designs, a low console or shelf is fixed to the back of the sofa to hold books, a lamp or decor.
Legs and the underside matter too. Tall legs make a sofa look lighter and easier to clean under, while upholstery down to the floor gives a more solid, heavier look.
Fabric and care
On curved sofas, the fabric is chosen together with the shape. Thick, stiff fabrics can wrinkle on curves, while soft, stretchier textiles follow the form more smoothly. Bouclé, velvet and soft-touch fabrics suit rounded shapes well.
With pets and children, stain-resistant fabrics and removable, washable covers are practical. Cushions on curved sofas are often cut to special shapes, so ordering spare covers makes later refreshing easier.
