Time around the dining table often lasts longer than the meal: family celebrations, conversations with guests, children doing homework. That is why many families choose upholstered chairs with padded seats and backs instead of hard wooden ones. But when an upholstered chair is chosen on looks alone, problems follow: it does not fit under the table, the fabric soils quickly and your back tires on long evenings. The right choice comes from several decisions about size and material taken together.
Height: seat, table and knee room
The most important measurement is the distance between the seat and the tabletop. If it is too small, knees hit the frame under the table. If it is too large, you look at the table from below and your arms tire. When choosing chairs, always measure the table height and the height of the apron under the top.
Upholstered seats have one quirk: the catalogue height is measured without anyone sitting. When you sit, the padding compresses and the real seat height drops. So trying the chair by sitting on it is the most reliable test.
With or without arms
Armchairs are more comfortable and better for long sitting, but they have two practical limits. First, if the arms do not slide under the table, the chair stays away from it and has to be moved every time. Second, an armchair is wider, so fewer chairs fit around the table.

- stain-resistant treated fabrics do not absorb spills immediately and give you time to wipe;
- tightly woven fabrics keep crumbs and dust from working in;
- light colours look elegant but soil quickly in families with children;
- faux leather or leather is easy to wipe but can feel warm in summer;
- velvet looks rich, but the pile shifts direction as people sit and stains need careful cleaning.
Abrasion resistance is usually stated by the fabric maker, and for chairs in daily use it makes sense to choose a fabric with a high rating.
Visual fit with the table
Upholstered chairs change the look of a dining area considerably. With a heavy, solid-topped table, upholstered chairs on slim metal legs create balance. Next to a light table with a glass or thin top, fuller and even slightly heavier chairs can work well. Chair legs should match the table legs or contrast clearly.
Mixing different chairs around one table is possible, but it needs a unifying element: the same fabric, the same leg material or the same shape.
Space around the table and everyday care
Each chair needs enough width along the table edge so that people do not bump elbows. Behind the chair there must be room to pull it back, stand up and walk past. Upholstered chairs are usually deeper than wooden ones, so in a small room check this distance carefully.
