A handleless kitchen stands out for its clean lines and calm appearance. There are several ways to achieve it: push-to-open mechanisms, a grip routed into the top edge of the front, or a channel profile built into the carcass. The last option is widely known as Gola. The name comes from a particular Italian system, but similar profiles are now made by many manufacturers.
How a Gola system works
The profile is an aluminium channel fixed to the carcass along the top or side edge of the front. The front stops a little short of the profile, leaving a recess behind it for your fingers. To open a door or drawer, you slip your fingers into the recess and pull on the edge of the front. The fronts have no protrusions at all, and a slim shadow line runs along the whole kitchen.
The main profile types are:
- Top horizontal profile (L-shaped). Runs under the worktop along the top row of base units.
- Middle horizontal profile (C-shaped). Sits between two rows of drawers and gives a grip to both.
- Vertical profile. Runs along the side edge of doors on tall units and the fridge housing.
- For wall units. Usually there is no separate profile; instead the front extends slightly below the carcass or is designed to be gripped from underneath.
What to consider at the planning stage
A Gola profile is not an accessory added later; it affects the construction of the carcass. It requires special cut-outs in the side panels, and the fronts become shorter than in a standard kitchen by the height of the profile. Several points therefore need to be resolved at the start:
- Drawer layout. Every middle profile takes some height from the fronts. In a three-drawer unit this reduces the internal height of the drawers.
- Dishwasher. The front of a fully integrated dishwasher has to line up with the rest of the kitchen. The machine height and the compatibility of its door fixing with the profile must be checked in advance.
- Oven. In a built-in oven unit the profile line is interrupted, and the alignment between the oven fascia and the line above needs planning.
- Corner units. Profile corners are joined with dedicated connectors; simply cut ends look worse and collect dirt.
- Worktop thickness and overhang. The worktop above the profile must align properly with the front so that the finger recess remains comfortable.
Colour and material
Profiles usually come in anodised aluminium or black or white powder coat, and some manufacturers also offer gold or dark bronze tones. There are two approaches. A profile in the same colour as the fronts almost disappears, and the kitchen looks monolithic. A contrasting colour turns the horizontal lines into a leading design feature. A black profile softens the transition on dark matt fronts, while aluminium or white suits light fronts.
Everyday pros and cons
A handle-free surface means clothes do not catch, which you notice in a narrow kitchen or a home with small children. Cleaning the fronts is easier, because there is no dirt building up around handles.
There are some trade-offs as well:
- crumbs and dust fall into the profile, so it needs a wipe with a damp cloth from time to time;
- the edge of the front you grip can show marks over time, especially in pale matt colours;
- heavy drawers may take slightly more effort to open than with a handle, so smooth-running runners are important;
- for older people or anyone with limited hand movement, handles may be more comfortable.
Who it suits
A Gola profile looks its best in minimalist, contemporary interiors and kitchens with long, straight runs of fronts. With classic moulded fronts it looks out of place. Before deciding, the best test is to open and close a few drawers yourself in a showroom or in a finished kitchen.
Some families choose a compromise: profiles on the base units, and push-to-open or grip-from-below fronts on the wall units. This removes an extra aluminium line from the upper row and makes the top of the kitchen look lighter. The front colour and ceiling height decide which combination suits your kitchen.
