Beauty salon project with pink upholstered pedicure chairs, a row of white manicure tables and a mirrored styling station — Restaurant furniture: durability of tables, chairs and seating

At home a chair is sat on once or twice a day. In a restaurant the same chair takes dozens of people a day, gets dragged across the floor, has bags hung on it and children climbing onto it, and in the evening it is lifted onto the table for cleaning. Under these conditions, solutions that are fine for home furniture fail quickly. When choosing restaurant furniture, construction, materials and maintenance need attention alongside looks.

Chairs: the joints are the weak point

A chair rarely breaks at the seat. It breaks where the legs meet the frame. When someone leans back and rocks on the two rear legs, those joints take a large force. That is why you want stretchers between the legs, joints that are glued or welded rather than just screwed, and, for wooden chairs, a hard timber species.

Metal-frame chairs are generally more durable, but check the quality of the welds and the thickness of the coating: once the coating chips, corrosion starts. Replaceable glides under the legs are a practical detail that protects the floor and reduces noise. Stackable chairs make cleaning and rearranging for events much easier.

Tables: base and top

Two things matter in a restaurant table: it must not wobble, and the top must last. Pedestal tables leave room for diners' knees, but the base must be heavy and wide enough, or the table tips when someone leans on the edge. Four-leg tables are more stable, but when tables are pushed together the legs can clash. Adjustable levelling feet for uneven floors are close to essential.

The top has to cope with hot dishes, alcohol, citrus acid, grease and being wiped many times a day. High-pressure laminate (HPL), compact laminate or properly sealed stone handle this well. Lacquered solid wood looks beautiful but needs more care and periodic refinishing. Edges deserve special attention, since impact and moisture mostly act there.

Banquettes and upholstered seating

Banquette seating makes a room comfortable and uses space efficiently, but if the fabric is wrong it looks stained and worn within months. For public spaces, choose upholstery with high abrasion resistance that resists stains and can be wiped with a damp cloth. Faux leather and specially treated fabrics are widely used for this.

The filling should also differ from a home sofa: dense foam keeps its shape over a long time, while soft filling sinks quickly. Making seats and backs as separate removable panels means the upholstery can later be renewed without replacing the whole banquette. That decision affects the restaurant's running costs for years.

Cleaning and hygiene

Restaurant furniture is cleaned every day. Deep grooves, gaps and seams collect crumbs and grease. Smooth surfaces, reachable corners and a gap between tables and banquettes for cleaning all reduce the workload. If chairs will be lifted onto tables, the back of the seat should be shaped so that it does not scratch the tabletop.

The cleaning products themselves affect furniture. Disinfectants and degreasers used in food service are often harsher than household products. Some lacquers, high-gloss plastics and faux leather can dull, crack or fade after prolonged contact with them. So when choosing materials, decide in advance which products will be used in the dining room and check them against the manufacturer's care recommendations. A simple care guide for staff, stating which surface is wiped with which cloth, keeps the furniture looking good for longer and prevents accidental damage.

A checklist before ordering

  • The seat count and floor plan are ready, and aisles are calculated around how waiting staff move.
  • A sample chair has been tested in real use: leaning back, rocking, dragging.
  • Tabletop material matches the actual menu: hot dishes, acids, grease.
  • The cleaning method for the upholstery is known.
  • Spare glides, upholstery panels and edge parts have been thought through.

Restaurants and other food service venues are among the clients who use Zaferoglu Mebel's services. The build of tables, chairs and banquettes can be matched at the design stage to the venue's concept and daily wear.
