When a bedroom is small, the first instinct is to cut down on furniture. But every bedroom needs a bed, somewhere to store clothes and a small surface next to the bed. The issue is not how much furniture there is but how it is arranged. In a well-planned small bedroom, you move freely, doors do not collide and things have their place. In a badly planned one, the wardrobe door hits the bed every morning and you have to edge sideways to get past.
Start with the bed
Planning a small bedroom begins with the bed, because it is the largest item. There are a few main options:
- Headboard against the wall opposite the door: the room looks symmetrical and both sides are accessible, but it needs a passage on each side.
- Bed pushed lengthwise against a wall: you gain floor space, but the person on the inside has to climb out. Works for a single sleeper or a child.
- Bed under the window: the remaining walls are free for a wardrobe, but the radiator and window opening must be considered.
Bed size is part of the decision too. Reducing the width of a double bed seriously affects comfort; it is better to make other furniture more compact.
Passages and doors
Most discomfort in a small room comes from narrow passages. There must be room to walk around the bed and bend to make it. In front of the wardrobe, the passage should not be completely blocked when the door is open and someone is standing there.
Drawing door swings on the plan reveals problems in advance. The room door, wardrobe doors, drawers and window casements should not get in each other's way. In a small room, this is often solved with a sliding-door wardrobe, which needs no swing space and can stand close to the bed.
Wardrobe: height and depth
In a small bedroom, the wardrobe should go up to the ceiling. The top section holds off-season clothes, duvets and suitcases, adding volume through height rather than floor area.
Wardrobe depth is an important decision too. Hanging clothes need a certain depth, but if the room is very narrow, part of the wardrobe can have shallow shelves. Placing the wardrobe on the wall beside the door, at the edge of the entrance, keeps the rest of the room open.
Creating a niche around the bed with wardrobe modules is another popular solution: narrow tall cabinets on either side and wall cabinets above the headboard. This uses the whole wall and reduces the need for bedside tables.
Compact, multi-purpose furniture
In a small room, each piece should do several jobs:
- A bed with a lift-up mechanism, giving a large box underneath for bedding and seasonal clothes.
- Wall-hung bedside tables that keep the floor clear, make the room feel lighter and simplify cleaning.
- A shelf or niche in the headboard that replaces a bedside table for a phone, book and lamp.
- A narrow console table used as both a dressing table and a desk.
- Wall-mounted lamps that take no space on bedside surfaces.
Many small pieces make a small room look cluttered. A few large elements integrated into the walls look calmer.
Visual space
Furniture colour and form affect how the room is perceived. Light, smooth fronts and a wardrobe in the same colour as the walls make a room look larger. A mirror on the wardrobe door reflects light and adds depth. Furniture on legs shows the floor beneath and looks lighter.
Light plays a big role too. Several light sources, such as reading lights at the headboard, lighting inside the wardrobe and soft general light, make a room feel more comfortable and spacious than a single ceiling fixture.
Check before you plan
Before ordering furniture, measure the room and mark on the plan: door and window positions and opening directions, radiators, sockets and switches, and the air conditioner. Then try the bed and wardrobe in several positions on paper and check the passages each time. This simple step prevents mistakes that are hard to fix later.
