The most used socket in a bedroom is the one next to the bed. In the evening phones charge, a reading lamp goes on, and sometimes a humidifier or small fan is plugged in. But because sockets are placed during renovation before the furniture arrives, they often end up behind the bedside table or hidden by the headboard, with a cable trailing across the floor. Building electrical elements directly into bedroom furniture solves this, but it has to be thought through at the renovation stage.
The planning sequence
The biggest mistake is choosing the furniture and then asking the electrician to move a socket. If the wall is already plastered and painted, a new cable run spoils the renovation. The correct order is:
- the size and position of the bed and the width and height of the bedside tables are settled first;
- if the headboard will have lights or sockets, the point where the cable leaves the wall is planned to fall behind the headboard;
- the wiring is run according to that plan;
- after the renovation the furniture dimensions are confirmed and the outlet points checked.
Done this way, cables stay hidden and the furniture sits flush against the wall.
Headboard lighting: reading lamps and ambient light
Lighting built into an upholstered or panelled headboard can do two jobs. The first is directional reading light: a small swivelling lamp or flexible-arm light on each side. It should not shine into the other person's eyes while one of you reads. The second is soft ambient light washing the wall from behind or above the headboard. It lets you find your way at night without switching on the main light and adds depth to the room.
For ambient light, LED strip is usually set into a hidden profile behind the headboard. The profile diffuses the light and helps the strip run cooler. A warm colour temperature makes the light more relaxing in a bedroom.
How the light is controlled also affects comfort. A dimmable system gives bright light for reading in the evening and very low light when you get up for a glass of water at night. A faint motion-sensor light under the bed, aimed at the floor, is useful for families with children and for older people: the path lights up as your feet touch the floor and the other person is not woken. All of these can run from one driver, but its rating must match the total load.
Sockets and USB in bedside tables
A socket unit on the top or side of a bedside table is the most convenient way to charge a phone. There are several options:
- a concealed pop-up socket unit in the top;
- a fixed socket on the side or inside a shelf;
- a unit with USB ports for charging without an adapter;
- a wireless charging module fitted under the tabletop.
With a wireless charging module, the top thickness must match the module's requirements or charging may not work. Place the socket unit so that a spilled glass of water on the table cannot run straight into it.
Switches you can reach from bed
Having to get out of bed to turn off the main light is a daily irritation. A switch in the headboard or bedside table, or a two-way switch working with the one by the door, solves it. This must be included in the wiring plan in advance, because a two-way switch needs its own cable.
On a double bed it also makes sense to give each side its own reading-light switch, so one person can control their light while the other sleeps.
Lighting in wardrobes and dressing areas
Light inside a wardrobe is particularly useful when dressing late in the evening or early in the morning. A sensor light that switches on as the door opens, or an LED profile along the shelf edge, helps you see the true colour of clothes. Here too the power supply and cable route should be planned so that the driver sits somewhere ventilated and accessible.
Safety rules
- All electrical components built into furniture should be good-quality, certified products.
- LED strip drivers must not be left in closed spaces without ventilation.
- Cables must not be pinched by moving parts, such as the frame of a lift-up storage bed.
- Leave the wiring to a qualified electrician.
