When someone at home is allergic to dust, house dust mites or pet dander, choosing upholstered furniture stops being purely a matter of taste. Sofas and armchairs are used for hours every day, and both the fabric fibres and the filling collect dust. Furniture does not treat allergies and is no substitute for medical advice, but the right materials and care routine can reduce the number of places where allergens build up.
Where allergens collect in upholstery
The problem mainly arises in three places. First, the fabric surface: long-pile and loosely woven fabrics hold dust and hair between their fibres. Second, seams, buttons and folds, where dust sits without being wiped away. Third, the filling and the internal spaces of the furniture: under the seat and inside cushions.
So the choice is not only about fabric. The shape of the piece, whether the covers come off and whether you can clean underneath are just as important.
Fabric: tight weave, smooth surface
For a family with allergies, fabrics with these characteristics are usually more practical:
- tightly woven, smooth fabrics — little dust gets between the fibres and it is easily removed from the surface;
- short-pile microfibre and modern synthetic upholstery fabrics — easy to wipe and vacuum, and many allow wet cleaning;
- natural or faux leather: a smooth face that a damp cloth deals with, though real leather also needs its own conditioning routine.
Long-pile velour, thick bouclé and heavily textured, coarse weaves may look appealing, but they hold more dust and pet hair. Check the cleaning symbols on the fabric label and the manufacturer's instructions: some fabrics allow only dry cleaning, others can be washed.
Removable covers
In a home with allergies, one of the most useful features is removable covers. If seat and back cushion covers come off with a zip, they can be washed regularly. Some sofas are made with fully removable covers.
There are points to bear in mind. Cover fabric can shrink in the wash, so follow the temperature and cycle approved by the manufacturer. It is advisable to wash all cushion covers at the same time to avoid differences in colour. Light-coloured fabrics tend to stay looking good better with frequent washing.
Shape: fewer places for dust to settle
The shape of the furniture directly affects how easy it is to clean:
- a sofa on tall legs is easy to vacuum underneath, whereas one sitting flat on the floor creates a closed space where dust collects;
- simple, straight-lined shapes are easier to clean than models with deep folds, lots of decorative stitching and buttons;
- lots of scatter cushions look good, but each one is another dust-collecting surface;
- exposed wood or metal armrests are easier to wipe than upholstered ones.
If the sofa has a storage box inside, it should also be aired and cleaned regularly.
Filling and internals
Upholstery filling is usually synthetic — polyurethane foam and synthetic fibres. Feather fillings add softness, but may not suit people sensitive to feathers and down. When ordering, it makes sense to ask about the filling and take into account the advice of the allergy sufferer's doctor.
Daily and seasonal care
However well the material is chosen, allergens build up without care. Practical rules:
- once a week, vacuum upholstered furniture with a soft attachment, paying particular attention to seams and folds; if possible use a vacuum with a high-efficiency filter;
- wash removable covers regularly on the cycle the manufacturer specifies;
- put a washable throw where a pet sleeps on the sofa;
- ventilate the room regularly, because dust mites thrive in humid conditions;
- vacuum dust up rather than shaking it off, otherwise it rises into the air and settles again.
It also helps if the person with allergies is out of the room during cleaning.
