Putting a cabinet in a narrow hallway, a small bedroom or the gap between bed and wall often runs into a door problem. A hinged door blocks the passage completely or hits the bed. A sliding door needs no swing space but opens only half the cabinet at a time. Bi-fold doors, sometimes called concertina doors, are a third way: the door folds in the middle as it opens and, with a short swing, exposes almost the whole cabinet.
How a bi-fold door works
A bi-fold door consists of two or more narrow panels joined by hinges. When opened, the panels fold against each other or gather at an angle. The door's movement is usually guided by a top track: one panel is fixed to a roller running in the track, the other to a fixed pivot.
The main types are:
- two-panel bi-fold, the simplest and most common, opening a single section;
- four-panel door, where two pairs of panels open from the centre to each side and fully expose a wide cabinet;
- top-hung system, where all the weight is on the top track, leaving no bottom track and a clear floor;
- top and bottom track system, keeping panels stable on tall, heavy doors.
Advantages
The biggest advantage of a bi-fold door is its small swing. A hinged door needs clear space as wide as the door, whereas each bi-fold panel is narrow, so less space in front is taken up. That can be decisive in hallways and walk-through rooms.
Other advantages:
- unlike sliding doors, the full width of the cabinet opens at once;
- no extra depth is needed in front for two doors to overlap;
- they suit technical niches in kitchens and bathrooms, such as a washing machine or boiler;
- narrow panels instead of a single large front can create a rhythmic, decorative look.
Limitations
Like any solution, bi-fold doors have weak points worth knowing in advance:
- when open, the folded panels take up some space inside the cabinet or at its front edge, so internal drawers may not pull out fully;
- the mechanism is more complex than a hinged door and may need periodic adjustment;
- there is a risk of fingers being trapped between panels, which needs attention in homes with children;
- very tall, heavy panels put more load on the track, so good-quality hardware matters.
The drawer issue is especially important. Because the folded panels rest at the side of the cabinet when open, drawer units are set back slightly or a gap equal to the panel thickness is left. This must be calculated at the design stage.
Materials and appearance
Bi-fold doors can be made from furniture board, MDF, glass or aluminium-framed panels. Lighter panels put less load on the mechanism and run smoothly for longer. Mirrored or glazed panels make a narrow hallway look wider, but their weight calls for sturdy hardware.
Panel width and number are chosen to suit the overall cabinet width. Very narrow panels make the door look fragmented, while very wide panels reduce the benefit of folding. The handle is usually placed on the panel near the fold line so the door can be pulled open in one movement. In handle-less designs, a push-to-open mechanism can also be used.
Where they work best
Bi-fold doors make particular sense for a cabinet along a narrow hallway, a bedroom wardrobe with little space beside the bed, a pantry or appliance niche in a small kitchen, a washing machine space in a bathroom and storage next to a balcony door. In a spacious walk-in wardrobe, ordinary hinged doors or an open system may be simpler and more practical.
Checks before ordering
- How much clear space is there in front of the cabinet for the door to open?
- Will there be drawers inside, and will the folded panels get in their way?
- Do the door height and material suit the mechanism's load limit?
- Is a floor track acceptable, or only a top track?
- If there are children at home, is there a solution against trapped fingers?
