In a small flat, the largest unused volume in the bedroom is usually under the bed. On a bed with legs it becomes a dust trap; a bed with drawers needs clear floor space beside it so the drawers can be pulled out. A lift-up bed solves both problems differently: the whole mattress base rises and the box underneath opens fully. The real question is how useful that box turns out to be in everyday life.
How the mechanism works
Gas struts are fixed to the frame on both sides. They carry part of the weight of the base and mattress, so you do not lift the full load; you only start the movement. The key point is matching the strut strength to the mattress. If the struts are too weak, the base will not stay up and has to be held by hand. If they are too strong, closing becomes awkward and the base tends to rise on its own.
That is why it matters to know which mattress will be used when you order. A heavy multi-layer orthopaedic mattress and a light foam one need different struts. If you plan to change the mattress later, say so at the start.
Which way should it open
The most common version lifts from the foot end: the head end stays hinged and the foot end rises. That needs free space at the foot of the bed. If the foot of the bed faces a wall or a wardrobe stands right in front of it, a side-opening mechanism may be more convenient.
Side opening gives access along the long edge, but on a wide double bed it means lifting the heavier side of the base. It makes more sense on single beds or beds for teenagers.
Inside the box: ventilation and dust
A mattress needs to breathe. With a slatted base, air circulates between the underside of the mattress and the box, and the gaps between slats help prevent moisture from building up even though the box itself is closed. A solid board base restricts airflow, and in a humid climate dampness can linger under the mattress.
Because the box sits close to the floor it is fairly well protected from dust, but it is not sealed. Textiles stored there stay tidier in fabric bags or vacuum bags. If the bottom of the box is a thin panel, it may bow under heavy items, so ask about it when ordering.
What is sensible to store there
A lift-up bed is not meant for things you reach for every day. Straightening the bedspread, moving pillows and lifting the base each time quickly becomes a chore. The box is ideal for seasonal and occasional items:
- winter duvets, spare pillows and bed linen;
- off-season clothes and shoe boxes;
- empty suitcases and travel bags;
- extra bedding for when guests stay over.
Clothes you wear daily are better kept in a wardrobe, chest of drawers or bedside unit. Thinking this split through in advance also helps size the wardrobe correctly.
Safety and everyday comfort
A raised base is effectively a heavy lid, so if there are small children at home it is especially important that the mechanism does not drop on its own. Gas struts can lose some pressure over the years; if the base no longer stays up as it used to, the struts are due for replacement, which can usually be done without changing the whole bed.
Another practical detail is a handle or strap for lifting. When the base is raised together with the bedding, there should be a comfortable grip point so fingers do not get pinched. A frame that is closed down to the floor also keeps dust and small objects from getting under the bed, and floor cleaning becomes easier because there is no need to reach under it.
Checklist before you order
- Do you know the mattress size, type and approximate weight?
- Is there free space in the room for the chosen opening direction?
- Is the base slatted, and what is the box bottom made of?
- Is the box one compartment or divided in the middle?
- Are the edges close to the floor sealed with edge banding?
- Is there a stay or catch that holds the base securely open?
