For many families an enclosed balcony or loggia becomes an extra room: a small desk, a seat for tea, a cupboard for seasonal things, sometimes a bookshelf. But conditions there differ from the rest of the home. Sunlight falls directly, temperatures swing widely between day and night and summer and winter, and condensation can form on cold glass and walls. A material that serves indoors for years without trouble can change within a season or two on a balcony, so furniture here needs its own approach.
Sun: effect on colour and surfaces
Ultraviolet light gradually changes the colour of laminate, paint, veneer and fabric. Dark and saturated colours, natural wood veneer and cotton fabrics fade most. The problem is not just lightening but unevenness: the area under an object on a shelf keeps its original colour while the surroundings fade, leaving a visible mark when the object is moved.
On a south- or west-facing balcony, light and neutral surfaces make this difference less noticeable. Curtains or blinds that block direct sun during the hottest hours protect both the furniture and whatever is stored inside. Glossy, mirror-like surfaces show every scratch in sunlight and cause glare, so matt finishes are more practical here.
Temperature swings and humidity
On an unheated balcony the air is cold in winter, then warms quickly when the sun comes out. These changes stress board edges, paint films and glued joints. On poorly bonded board the edge banding starts lifting, and moisture gets in through any exposed cut. That is why sealing every edge with good banding, including hidden ones, matters especially for balcony furniture.
Condensation forms mainly near cold external walls and glass. Leaving an air gap instead of pushing a cabinet directly against the external wall, raising it off the floor on legs or a plinth, and including slim ventilation slots in the doors all stop damp and smells building up inside.
Choosing materials
- Laminated board with properly sealed edges performs well on an enclosed balcony and is easy to clean.
- Painted fronts are more sensitive to temperature swings; on an unheated balcony the risk of cracking rises over time.
- Solid wood expands and shrinks with changes in humidity and can crack or warp here without a protective finish.
- Moisture-resistant boards are worth considering where a sink or washing machine stands on the balcony.
If you plan a desk on the balcony, position it with the movement of the sun in mind. Directly facing the window, a screen is unreadable in the glare, and papers and devices on the desk heat up in the afternoon. Placing the desk perpendicular to a side wall and choosing a light, matt top is easier on the eyes and reduces surface heating. The drawers are also not the place for electronics, candles, cosmetics or anything else sensitive to heat.
Fabrics and soft elements
Sun-resistant fabric matters for balcony seats and cushions. Synthetic fabrics whose fibres are dyed during manufacture fade less in sunlight than cotton dyed on the surface. Removable, washable covers help deal with dust and damp smells. Bringing cushions indoors for the winter when the balcony is not used extends their life considerably.
Hardware and placement
In damp conditions ordinary steel screws, hinges and handles can rust. Choose hardware with a corrosion-resistant finish and check the mechanisms from time to time. When placing furniture, also consider:
- Furniture must not block window sashes from opening or the glass from being cleaned.
- Heavy cabinets are better placed against the wall of the home rather than the outer edge of the balcony.
- If there is a radiator or air conditioner, furniture should stand far enough away not to block air circulation.
- On a small balcony, a folding table and wall-mounted shelves keep the floor clear.
